UK Home Automation Series Part 12: Philips Hue Motion Sensors, Unboxing, Set up & Demo

Here I unbox, set up and demo the brand spanking new Philips Hue motion sensors! They are really really good if may say so, I love them, they are definitely the best addition to my Hue system so far, these now fully automate my lights in the hall and landing, so no more messing about in the dark. They are also very very simple to fit and to set up, fitting is a matter of a small hole in the wall or in the ceiling, or you can even have them free standing on a shelf etc. The app tells you how to set them up from scratch, i had two so registering the second was as easy as the first.

Now to tinker with the settings until we get them right for everyone in the house.

As i said in the video i’d list some of the things that i’ve used in my home automation videos and they are below, they will take you straight to the relevant Amazon page so you don’t have to look for them.

UK Home Automation Series Part 10 Setting up Philips Hue to work with Amazon Echo

Welcome to Part 10 of my home automation series, this video is about setting up my Philips Hue system to work with Amazon Echo & the Alexa app.

I found this one a little tricky as i thought that Philips Hue was a skill, so i tried looking it up in the smart home skill section of the Alexa app and couldn’t find it anywhere i tried all sorts, even going to the Hue app itself to see if i could install from there, but it turns out all i had to do was go into the Alexa app, go into settings then Smart Home then scroll down until you see ‘Your devices’ then press the discover devices text and then quickly press the centre button on your Philips Hue Bridge and you should be in business, nothing else to do, just talk to Alexa and away you go. I was surprised at how easy it was once i knew how!

So lets get this straight, Philips Hue isn’t a skill, you just search for it in your devices and it’s automatically set up to run with your Amazon Echo! Cool eh? But a bit bitter sweet for me as i took so long to find that out myself through trial and error, as seen in the video.

Please Note: Ensure your Philips Hue system is set up properly beforehand, i.e. app set up, lamps named correctly, then make sure all the light switches are ON, if they are off the bulbs will not be powered and connected to the Hue Bridge. It takes a bit of getting used to because we’ve all been used to using our hands since birth, now we’ve got to learn to use our voices in our new smart homes! Can’t wait for the Echo Dots to arrive in Oct to complete the system it’s gonna be epic!
